The mode distinction is the real one — non-transferred: the arc burns cathode-to-nozzle inside the torch and only hot gas exits; transferred: the workpiece becomes the anode and takes the arc current directly — but geometry, plume shape, melt-pool size, and temperatures are illustrative and not to scale. Thermal torches are equilibrium-leaning plasma near or above 10,000 K in the core: the opposite design goal from the cold, non-thermal discharges elsewhere on this site.
