Joule Heating System

Product Detail

ACS Material’s FlashVolt® Joule Heating System is a compact, ultrafast flash Joule heating instrument for the laboratory bench. By passing a controlled current through a resistive sample stage, it converts electrical energy directly into heat — driving samples to high temperature in milliseconds, far faster than conventional furnace heating. With current ramp times as short as 1 ms and real-time temperature, voltage, and current monitoring, FlashVolt® is built for rapid, repeatable high-temperature experiments at small scale.

Scaling up beyond the bench?

The HelioVolt® platform extends ultrafast Joule heating from 0.5 mL lab systems to 50 mL / 300 mL amplified units and full industrial production lines — up to 3600°C with five programmable heating modes.

How flash Joule heating works

FlashVolt® uses resistance-based (Joule) heating: an electrical current passes through a conductive sample or sample stage, and the material’s electrical resistance converts that current into heat almost instantly. This enables an extremely fast temperature rise — reaching thousands of kelvin within seconds — and equally rapid cooling once the current stops. The system operates under vacuum or controlled atmosphere, with a sapphire observation window and monochromatic optical temperature measurement for accurate readings at high temperature.

Applications

Ultrafast Joule heating supports a range of high-temperature processing and rapid-thermal experiments. Because the instrument is defined by its physical capability — very fast resistive heating to high temperature under controlled atmosphere — researchers apply it across many material systems, including:

  • Rapid sintering of ceramic materials.
  • Synthesis of metallic glasses.
  • High-temperature carbonization and rapid thermal activation studies.
  • Short-residence-time thermal processing and reaction screening.

Actual results depend on material conductivity, sample geometry, atmosphere, loading, and process settings.
