ALab™ DMS4-550 Magnetic Hotplate Stirrer
Product Detail
The ALab™ DMS4-550 Magnetic Hotplate Stirrer is a 4-inch digital heating magnetic stirrer with a 100 × 100 mm glass-ceramic plate. It heats from room temperature to 550 °C in 1 °C increments and stirs stirring from 50 to 1500 rpm in 1 rpm steps, with set and real-time speed, temperature and time shown together on the LCD. Liquid temperature control accuracy is ±1 °C below 100 °C and ±1% above 100 °C, taken through the external PT1000 sensor, which is accurate to ±0.2 °C. Maximum stirring volume is 10 L of water and maximum stirrer bar length is 40 mm.

Operating and safety features
The glass-ceramic plate resists the acids, alkalis and solvents in routine laboratory use, withstands high plate temperatures, and wipes clean after accidental spills of solvents or oils. Confirm compatibility with us for concentrated or unusual reagents before use. The all-metal housing resists corrosion, dissipates heat and contains it in the event of a fault. A raised edge around the work platform keeps spills out of the housing interior; the instrument is rated IP21, so protect it from direct water jets and immersion. Two independent safety circuits monitor the instrument continuously: on overheating or sensor failure it reports an error and stops heating, and on a short circuit it cuts the supply. You can set a safety temperature, a safety lock guards against accidental changes to operating conditions, and a buzzer sounds on malfunction and at the end of a countdown. A residual-heat warning flashes HOT on the display while the plate is above 50 °C and continues to flash after the instrument is switched off, so the plate is never left hot without warning. Three heating modes cover rapid, standard and stable heating. The drive is a DC brushless motor: no commutator brushes, so it runs quietly and needs no routine servicing. It is not rated for use in explosive or flammable atmospheres — do not operate it where flammable vapour may accumulate.
FAQ
What is the maximum plate temperature, and is it the same as the safety cut-out?
They are two different figures and should not be confused. The hotplate heating range is room temperature to 550 °C in 1 °C increments — that is the range you can set on the plate. Overheating protection acts at 580 °C and is a protective limit, not a working setting. The residual-heat warning comes on at 50 °C. All three are plate figures, not medium temperatures.
How accurate is the temperature control?
Liquid temperature control accuracy is ±1 °C below 100 °C and ±1% above 100 °C, taken through the external PT1000 sensor, which is accurate to ±0.2 °C. These figures apply to the medium with the sensor immersed in it, not to the plate surface. As with any hotplate stirrer, the accuracy you see in practice depends on vessel, fill volume and immersion depth; if your method needs a guaranteed figure under specific conditions, please contact us before ordering.
Which stirrer bar should I use, and what volume can it handle?
Maximum stirring volume is 10 L of water and the longest stirrer bar it takes is 40 mm. The drive magnet is a high-temperature strong magnet and handles viscous liquids well, though viscous media will not reach the 10 L water figure — there is no fixed viscosity limit, so match the bar to the vessel and confirm by trial. Tell us your medium and vessel and we will advise.
What do the three heating modes do?
Mode A gives rapid heating, mode B standard heating and mode C stable heating, so you can trade speed against overshoot to suit the method. Ramp rates and settling times vary with vessel and load, so we do not quote a single number for each mode — contact us if you need indicative figures for a specific setup.
Can the unit be controlled or logged from a PC?
Yes. The instrument has an RS232 data connection and supports remote control from a PC. Confirm the cable and command set with us before you build it into an automated method, so we can supply the right parts with the order.
What supply does it need, and is it a universal-input instrument?
The supply is 100–120 / 200–240 V, 50/60 Hz. These are two separate bands rather than a single continuous 100–240 V range, so the instrument is not a universal-input unit and does not switch between them automatically — order it configured for your mains. Total power is 460 W: 410 W heating and 10 W motor. Tell us your region and we will confirm the supply configuration and plug with your quotation.
Related products
The models share the RS232 connection, IP21 protection class and 1 min – 99 h 59 min timer. Supply differs: the heating models are configured 100–120 / 200–240 V, the stir-only DMS4 is 100–240 V. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right model and configuration with your quotation.
