Carbon nanotube sponges (CNT) are created when carbon nanotubes self-assemble into a three-dimensional framework. The result is a sponge made up of tiny, hollow, strong carbon nanotube cylinders. CNT sponges are lightweight, elastic, chemically stable, and highly porous. In addition, they float on water, have a stable structure, and have a high surface area that is hydrophobic. Potential applications include:

  • Environmental cleanup. CNT sponges show great promise for use in environmental issues such as water purification and oil spill cleanup.
  • Catalysis. CNT sponges are ideal catalysts or as skeletons for loading other catalysts.
  • Energy storage. Bulk CNT sponges serve as excellent electrodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their high surface are and electrical conductivity.
