InSitu Pro™ AIH1700 is the infrared focusing furnace at the top of the InSitu Pro™ family: RT to 1700 °C with heating at up to 30 °C per second. An ellipsoidal reflector focuses the infrared source onto a platinum φ10 mm stage for real-time, in-situ, high-resolution observation of melting, solidification, crystallization and other phase transitions — in a vacuum/atmosphere chamber, holding ±0.1 °C.

1700 °C and oxidation: choose your environment

When operated in air or another oxidizing atmosphere, many metals and alloys can oxidize extremely rapidly at 1500–1700 °C. Under diffusion-controlled conditions, oxide growth is often approximated by parabolic kinetics; actual behavior depends on material composition, surface condition, temperature, atmosphere, and exposure time. Unlike the resistive AH stages, the AIH1700 is specified with a vacuum/atmosphere chamber — vacuum operation is available when the furnace is configured with the optional vacuum system. Hold a sample for an hour at a working temperature and see:

Model: parabolic oxidation x² = k·t with an Arrhenius rate constant — an approximation for diffusion-controlled oxidation, not every material or temperature; the vacuum panel illustrates the model response when the oxidant supply is suppressed. The AIH1700 is specified with a vacuum/atmosphere chamber (vacuum system optional) — confirm the intended operating atmosphere and pumping configuration at quotation. Curves are schematic, not performance data for a specific furnace or sample.

FAQ

How is infrared focusing different from resistive heating?

Instead of a resistive element under the sample, an ellipsoidal reflector focuses radiation from an infrared source onto the heating zone — the structure behind the AIH1700's RT–1700 °C range and Max 30 °C/s heating. The trade-off is furnace geometry: a platinum φ10 mm stage, a 17 mm window-to-stage distance, and a 12.5 kg tower body rather than a thin flat stage.

Can it run in vacuum?

The chamber is specified for vacuum or atmosphere operation; the vacuum system itself is an option confirmed at quotation. Within the InSitu Pro™ optical family this is the listed vacuum route at ultra-high temperature — the ACH400SV covers vacuum service to 400 °C.

What can I watch through the window?

Real-time, in-situ, high-resolution observation of melting, solidification, crystallization and other phase transitions at high temperature, in reflection or transmission through the φ7 mm JGS2 window (220–2500 nm).

Will my sample oxidize at 1700 °C?

In air, many metals and alloys oxidize extremely rapidly at these temperatures — the simulator above gives a schematic comparison rather than a material-specific prediction. Some oxides, ceramics, refractories, and minerals may be more suitable, depending on phase stability, atmosphere compatibility, and exposure time. Because the AIH1700's chamber is specified vacuum/atmosphere, vacuum operation is available when configured with the optional vacuum system — confirm the environment at quotation.
