High-temperature atmosphere: plan for oxidation

When operated in air or another oxidizing atmosphere, many metals and alloys can oxidize very rapidly at 1400–1500 °C. Under diffusion-controlled conditions, oxide growth is often approximated by parabolic kinetics; actual behavior depends on material composition, surface condition, temperature, atmosphere, and exposure time. Hold a sample for an hour at a working temperature and see:

Model: parabolic oxidation x² = k·t with an Arrhenius rate constant — an approximation for diffusion-controlled oxidation, not every material or temperature; the vacuum panel illustrates the model response when the oxidant supply is suppressed. AH1500-RG and AH1400-RG-XY are specified with an atmosphere chamber — confirm the intended operating atmosphere and applicable conditions at quotation; no vacuum capability is listed in their standard specifications. Curves are schematic, not performance data for a specific stage or sample.

FAQ

AH1500-RG or AH1400-RG-XY — which one?

Pick by what the experiment needs. The AH1500-RG gives the higher ceiling (1500 °C), a furnace-type stage, a transmission light path (φ5 mm light hole plus φ10 × 1 mm bottom window), and the rotating viewing window. The AH1400-RG-XY trades 100 °C of ceiling for a tunnel-type stage with X/Y sample travel (±6 / ±5 mm at 0.01 mm accuracy) in reflection. Geometry differs too: window-to-stage distance is 7.5 vs 11.6 mm.

What does the rotating viewing window do?

The AH1500-RG's top window glass is mounted off-center and can rotate, which helps keep the field of view clear during testing at ultra-high temperature. The JGS2 glass is also manually removable and replaceable for cleaning.

Will my sample oxidize at 1400–1500 °C?

If the stage is operated in air, many metals and alloys can oxidize very rapidly at these temperatures — the rate depends on composition, surface condition, temperature, atmosphere, and exposure time, and the simulator above gives a schematic comparison rather than a material-specific prediction. Some oxides, ceramics, refractories, and minerals may be more suitable, depending on phase stability, atmosphere compatibility, and exposure time. No vacuum capability is listed in the standard specifications for AH1500-RG or AH1400-RG-XY — for oxidation-sensitive work, confirm the intended operating atmosphere at quotation.

Not this hot — or cooling too?

For 1000–1200 °C work, the AH1000 / AH1200 pair covers it on a planar ceramic stage; below that, the AH200–AH800 heating family. These are heating-only stages — for sub-ambient points, the LN₂ family (−190 °C) is the right tool.

How do I order?

AH1500-RG / AH1400-RG-XY are configured to your optics and quoted individually. Use the quote request on this page or the Stage Selector, tell us your microscope or spectrometer and target temperatures, and our engineers confirm the configuration and reply with pricing and lead time.
